The Network of English-Speaking Women

was founded in 1993 with the goal of providing a forum for communication and exchange between English-speaking women in and around Freiburg, Germany. By putting women in contact with one another and encouraging the exchange of information and experience – both personal and professional – the Network offers fun and informative evenings in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere.

Our next Meeting: Friday, October 20th, at 7:30 pm

Calligraphy Through the Ages

Calligraphy (from the Greek – kallos:  "beauty" + graph:  "writing") is a form of ornamental handwriting found in various cultures throughout the world and whose origins date back to ancient times. A contemporary definition of calligraphic practice would be: ‘’the art of giving form to signs in an expressive, harmonious and skillful manner.’’
Member Dörthe Fiwek has been honing her skills in western calligraphy for the past two years developing her own personal style.
She will share her expertise with us, starting off by taking us back in time. Dörthe will talk about calligraphy’s history and the development of different fonts through the years. She will explain the different tools that can be used to write - including some unexpected ones! – in addition to the different inks adopted in different styles.
Afterwards, Dörthe will lead us through the basic strokes. Then we can all have a go!

If you want to join us please register with Liz by October 18th at registration@nesw.de or call 0171-724 6834.
